The Canadian edition of Metro has released an article about the Eastern REM project — an automated light rail network that will connect downtown Montreal to the east and northeast of the city. The author of the article talked about the problems of this route and mentioned the string transport.
In particular, the article criticizes CDPQ Infra, the company that will implement the Eastern REM. According to Gérard Beaudet, a professor at the School of Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture at the University of Montreal, «CDPQ Infra works with the thinking of the '60s».
The main complaint is that the company is imposing technology on the city that lags far behind modern and more efficient transport solutions. This is also confirmed by alternative developments. The author cites the example of Unitsky String Technologies Inc. technology, which is currently being developed in the UAE. Switzerland, Puerto Rico, Lesotho, Russia, Belarus and Australia are interested in these light, flexible and fast vehicles.
Another alternative to Eastern REM is the Coop MGV high-speed monorail. However, according to our information, this organization has not yet implemented major projects. At the same time, passenger and freight transport of Unitsky String Technologies inc. is already being successfully tested in Belarus and the UAE.
